This was one of the articles in the Daily Digest today. The UConn Pro-Life club is going to have a meeting tonight about why pro-life is good and pro-choice is bad. First of all, I can’t believe UConn has a pro-life club. Second of all, this makes me incredibly angry.

So let’s talk about abortion. I need to vent.

I am Pro-Choice. Why? Because everyone has a right to choose what to do with their own body. You don’t think abortion is right? Fine. Don’t get one. But don’t go around telling others that they can’t get one, either.

When most abortions happen, the baby doesn’t exist yet. It is just a cell that may eventually grow into a fetus. Do you eat caviar? How about eggs? Well, they’re both at the same stage of development as this pre-abortion cell when they are carted away to become food. If they weren’t tempered with, they, too, would grow into fetuses. Do you protest the abortions of millions of fish and chickens? I didn’t think so. Because we aren’t killing the chickens or the fish, we are simply preventing them from coming into existence. And I know we don’t generally eat human eggs, but it’s the same concept. Just a cell.

A lot of pro-life people tell me that if you’re having sex, you should be prepared to get pregnant. You were fully in the know about what could happen, you shouldn’t be able to get out of it that easily. I’m sorry, get out of it? Pregnancy is supposed to be someone wonderful, something wanted. Having a baby is supposed to be a miracle. Why would you subject someone to a pregnancy they don’t want? Why would you subject yet another baby to being unwanted? There are far too many children in this world who don’t have good homes. Why add another one when it could be prevented?

So the next thing I ask is, what if the girl got raped? And I get, “Oh, then it’s okay. But only then.” Well first of all, that would be impossible to enforce. Second of all, whether a girl gets raped or she simply makes a mistake, the future baby is going to be just as unplanned and unwanted. You aren’t doing anybody any favors by insisting that baby still be born. Ultimately, it’s the mother’s choice whether or not she continues with the pregnancy. 

Her choice, and nobody else’s.
